La Chascona

#1 2020 oil on gesso on board 56 x 42 cm

La Chascona began with a visit to the garden of Pablo Neruda’s house of the same name in Santiago, Chile, initially a hideaway for his mistress Mathilde. La Chascona, Quechen for unruly hair, was also her nickname. The genius poet, diplomat, philanderer and self confessed rapist, was spied upon and allegedly murdered by the fascist regime. His garden is full of stories, poetry, love, secrets, deception and betrayal, witnessed by the trees.
